What We Handle

Good hardscape is mostly what you don't see. A paver walkway or patio is only as durable as the base under it, and the projects that fail are almost always the ones where someone skipped the prep. We build exterior and hardscape projects the way we build everything else - from the ground up, with the base and drainage done right before the first paver is set.

That means excavating to the proper depth, laying and compacting a stone base, and planning where water goes before we think about the surface. Pavers, granite steps, a walkway, a patio - the finished look matters, but it's the compacted base and clean grade transitions underneath that decide whether it's still flat and tight in ten New England winters.

On a recent Newburyport project, we took a worn front entry down to the ground and rebuilt it: an eight-inch compacted base, Cambridge ArmorTec Ledgestone pavers with a contrasting border, solid granite treads set on a new poured pad, and a washed-stone side path to the back gate. When the homeowners decided mid-project to finish the lawn in sod instead of seed, we adjusted and they had a finished front yard the same week as the finished walkway.

We work in the materials that hold up here - Cambridge pavers, natural stone, granite - and we handle the grade work that ties it all together, including regrade, seed, or sod to finish the job clean. The walkway, the steps, the drainage, and the lawn around them come together as one project, not four separate calls.

You get one point of contact and the same oversight we bring indoors. We schedule the work, hold the crew to our standard, and leave the site clean. Outdoor work is still your home - it gets treated that way.

If you're planning a walkway, patio, steps, or a full front-entry rebuild in Southern New Hampshire or Northern Massachusetts, we'll walk the site, talk through materials and grade, and hand you a clear written estimate. Built to last through the winters, not just the first summer.

Exterior & Hardscape — FAQs

Why does the base under a walkway or patio matter so much?

Because it's what fails. Most paver and walkway problems - heaving, settling, gaps - trace back to a base that was too thin or poorly compacted. We excavate to depth and compact a proper stone base so the surface stays flat through freeze-and-thaw.

What materials do you work with for hardscape?

Cambridge pavers, natural stone, and granite for steps and treads, among others. We steer you toward materials that hold up to New England winters and match the look of your home.

Do you handle drainage and grading, or just the surface?

Both. Where water goes is part of the design, not an afterthought. We plan drainage and grade transitions up front and finish with regrade, seed, or sod so the whole area is done - not just the pavers.

Can you rebuild an entire front entry - steps, walkway, and all?

Yes. Full entry rebuilds are some of our favorite work: granite steps, paver walkways, side paths, and the grading and lawn around them, handled as a single project.

Will the finished hardscape look like it belongs with my house?

That's the aim. We choose materials, colors, and borders that fit the home and the setting, and we plan the layout so the hardscape feels designed, not dropped in.

Do you do smaller hardscape projects, or only full rebuilds?

Both. A single set of granite steps, a short walkway, or a patio is just as welcome as a full front-entry rebuild. We scope each one clearly so you know what's included.
